Difficulty:

Intermediate

Materials Needed:

5 mm hook, or hook needed to obtain gauge

#4 worsted weight yarn in 2 colours, Yarn A & Yarn B

Blocking Board (Optional)

Stitches Used:

ch = chain

sc = single crochet

dc = double crochet

sl st = slip stitch

BLO = back loop only

TLO = third loop only

** = refers to the stitches inside the stars in that round

Commas indicate the next stitch to be done and line breaks are used when you're working into specific spaces/stitches instead of into every consecutive stitch.

FRONT SQUARE

Round 1

Yarn A: magic circle, ch 3 (counts as first double crochet), 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3dc, ch 2, sl st into 3rd ch

Round 2

ch 1, 8 dc in ch 2 space, ch 1

1 sc in ch 2 space, ch 1

in the middle double crochet make 2 sc, ch 1, 2 sc, ch 1,

1 sc in ch 2 space, ch 1

8 dc in ch 2 space, ch 1, sl st into middle dc, fasten off

Round 3

For Round 3 you have two options. You can either make all of the following stitches in the back loop only or in the third loop only, also known as the "horizontal bar". This second option is what I have used in all the example photos. It makes the heart stand out and gives it a neater edge. However TLO is trickier - as not every stitch from Round 2 will have a third loop, like the chain stitches. In those spots you can insert your hook into any loop nearby as long as it hides on the back of the heart and keeps the correct order of the stitches. If this is too troublesome for you then BLO works as well and your stitches will be easier to keep track of.

Connect Yarn B in ch 1 at bottom point of heart, into TLO or BLO: sc, hdc, 2 dc, ch 2, dc, hdc, 4 sc, ch 2, 4 sc, hdc into the middle dc that had the slip stitch in round 2, 4 sc, ch 2, 4 sc, hdc, dc, ch 2, 2 dc, hdc, sc, sl st into ch 1

Round 4

skip 2 stitches: 3 dc, ch 1

in ch 2 space: 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, sl st into 3rd ch, fasten off

Round 5

Connect Yarn A in the gap before you fastened off.

ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc

3 dc into the next space. Repeat all the way around and in all the corners stitch 3 dc, ch 3, 3dc (Standard granny square pattern), sl st into 3rd ch

Round 6

BACK SQUARE

Repeat the entire front square pattern above but in Yarn A only. For the back, I stitch into BLO in Round 3 as it's faster and sits flatter. See photo.

CONNECTING SIDES

Optional but recommended: block the front and back squares for an easy assembly. Place WS together ensuring that your hearts are facing the same directions. With the front facing you, begin connecting at the top left corner.

With Yarn A: Begin in the middle dc of the corner, sc into every stitch until the top right corner.

POUCH TOP

Round 7:

ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch 1)

to the left of the ch 4: dc into the first space on front piece only.

skip 3 stitches, dc into the next space, ch 1, dc (This is a V stitch)

Repeat ** three times until you reach the first side seam.

dc into the top sc, ch 1, dc into that same sc

skip 2 stitches, dc into the next space, ch 1, dc

skip 3 stitches, dc into the next space, ch 1, dc

Repeat ** three times, sl st into 3rd ch

Round 8

ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch 1), dc, ch 1

Place a V stitch in all the spaces between the Round 7 V stitches all the way around, ch 1, sl st into 3rd ch, fasten off

Round 9

Connect Yarn B in the space where you fastened off, ch 4, dc in same space. Place a V stitch in all the spaces between the Round 8 V stitches, sl st into 3rd ch

Round 10

ch 1, in the top of the first dc of every round 9 V stitch: place 5 dc all the way around (see photo), sl st into ch 1

where to place your 5 double crochets for round 10

CORD

The example photos have cords made of 55 chain stitches made in Yarn B. The cords are then woven in and out of the V stitches from Round 8.

You can make whatever choices you'd like for your cord. You can make it longer to be tied in a bow, add a cord stopper, beads, or tightening knots.

Happy crafting!!

I know the feeling of not having the time or interest to decorate for Halloween and then wishing you did on October 31st when the trick or treaters are about to arrive!

Here are some simple ideas for last minute decorations that will be sure to impress on Halloween night!

𖥔 Spider Webs

Draw attention to your front step by stringing together a spider web from yarn or rope. This is a great way to quickly make a statement since other decorations or lights can also be hung from the web. Follow these tutorials from Decor Hint and Drops Design.

𖥔 Barren Branches

If you live near are a treed area there's a good chance you'll easily come across some deadfall branches. Prop up or lean the branches near your door to create an eery entrance! See how Town & Country did it below!

𖥔 Ghost Garland

Grab a bit of white yarn and you'll have yourself a ghoulish garland in no time to string across windows or doorways! If you can't get your hands on googly eyes which are used in this A Beautiful Mess tutorial a black felt marker would do the trick.

𖥔 Jack O' Lantern Balloons

Check your local dollar store for orange balloons and use markers or construction paper to make quick and adorable jack o' lanterns to adorn your front entrance. See how Design Improvised made hers!

𖥔 Crochet Spiders

This one might be my favourite on the list. Imagine walking up to trick or treat and seeing a big fuzzy spider dangling in front of you! This free crochet pattern from Zeens & Roger shows you how to work them up super quickly! You could double or triple the amount of stitches to make spiders in different sizes.

𖥔 Coloured Light Bulbs

Last but certainly not least - If you've got no time or supplies, stop at a hardware store on your way home from work and pick up a cheap coloured light bulb. Pop it into your porch light to flood your entrance with a fun and spooky colour. I put a green one in at our house every year and it always draws in trick or treaters!

Happy decorating and Happy Halloween!
